Surprising Benefits of Being a Homemaker & Stay at Home Mom
Homemaking and motherhood is no small feat. It’s an important role and an honorable role, to say the least. And while it can be hard work at times, it comes with it’s many benefits. These benefits of being a stay at home mom, homemaker, housewife (whatever you like to call it), make it all so worth it.
Being a stay-at-home mom of small children and teens, stay-at-home wife, and embracing those traditional roles on a daily basis is full-time work.
It truly is a lot of work to be a traditional wife and stay home and take care of the family. But it’s a work I wouldn’t trade for any amount of money.
I’m a mom of four and a holistic esthetician and nurse turned full-time homeschool mom and homemaker. I had always wanted to be a stay-at-home parent and take care of the home, although I had never had that opportunity.
But after my fourth baby was born, I just didn’t have it in me to leave him. I felt physically sick just thinking about returning to work.
I knew all too well how hard it was to go back to my job after maternity leave with my older three and the impact it had on family life, and when my youngest came along, I just couldn’t do it- not again.
While my husband was a little skeptical on how we were going to make this work and provide for our family on one income, he quickly realized how beneficial (including financial benefits) it was having me home.
And can I tell ya, we’ve never looked back or regretted our decision.
1. Building Stronger Connections through Quality Time With Family as a Homemaker (Family Bonding)
Even in these modern times where the talk of gender stereotypes is on the rise, many find themselves appreciating traditional marriages and traditional roles. One of the benefits I’ve found of embracing that traditional role as a house wife is quality time with family.
It seems obvious that we aren’t connecting with our family when the majority of the time we are only seeing them in passing.
Life has a way of pulling us in all different directions with its busyness. Our schedules don’t always prioritize our families and relationships the way it should.
Homemaking gives you the opportunity to really strengthen those relationships.
Stay-at-home parents have the privilege of spending quality time with their children, witnessing and actively participating in their first steps, first words, and various milestones.
When I was a working mother with a full time job, I got home in the evening from work and started the boys’ homework with them, baths, and dinner, and then it was time for bed.
When working that traditional job, I felt like we didn’t even have time for any one-on-one meaningful conversation, as my life was basically multitasking my household responsibilities and my family.
But being a stay at home mom and homemaker changed the game.
I wanted them to be first – to have my full, undivided attention. and staying home has truly been on of the best things for our family.

2. Managing Household Tasks Without the Pressure
As a homemaker and stay at home mom, I have the time to take care of my home and I take pride in that. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “a clean home is a happy home” and it’s such a true statement.
Now I’m not saying this place is a showroom. At the same time, what I am saying is that I’m no longer stepping over piles of laundry or leaving dishes in the sink longer than needed because of long work hours at my nursing job.
And the best part? I’m not rushed to do so!
I’m able to prioritize the shape of my home for myself and my family on my time. And that’s such a good feeling.
3. Direct Impact on Child Development
Stay-at-home parents have a direct impact on their children’s social skills, human development, and screen time management, promoting healthier habits and fostering strong family bonds.
Becoming a stay at home mom and homemaker was so freeing because it allowed me to take back control of my children.
I was finally able to homeschool them and that was something I wouldn’t have been able to do effectively with the job I had.
Being my children’s primary caregiver has hands down been the best decision.
4. Flexibility Benefits of Being a Homemaker
Unlike the rigid structure of a full-time job, staying at home enables parents to tailor their schedule to fit the family’s needs, including engaging in volunteer work or pursuing personal interests during free time.
Homemaking gives you the flexibility needed to care for your home and the people in it with less stress. You’re able to pivot your routine if needed. Homemaking truly is the most flexible job ever.
Quite honestly, I know I’ve had to switch things up so many times depending on the season we are in. And as a homemaker, I can absolutely make that happen!
5. Cutting Costs and Expenses (Saving Money)
You might not realize it, but being a homemaker and staying at home can actually save you much money.
Yes, if you are a full-time homemaker, you are most likely living on one income- BUT you are actually cutting out certain expenses.
You’re most likely reducing or cutting out childcare costs completely.
And not to mention those commute expenses that you would normally have if you were traveling back and forth to your traditional job. Some of those would include the cost of fuel, the frequent oil changes, tire rotations and replacements, brake changes and replacements, etc.

6. Homemaking is a Ministry
Beyond the responsibilities of meal preparation and household chores, homemaking allows for intentional investment in the emotional, spiritual, and educational well-being of our children.
This role enables us to create a nurturing atmosphere where values are instilled, character is shaped, and bonds are strengthened.
As homemakers, we have the unique opportunity to pour into our children’s lives daily, fostering a foundation of love, support, and guidance that extends far beyond the confines of our homes. And that’s truly such a blessing.
7. Creating a Positive Home Environment as a Homemaker
This is one of my very favorite benefits of being a homemaker. Creating a nourishing, comfortable, and relaxed home has been so good for my soul and such a blessing to my family.
As homemakers, we have the time and the energy to put into cultivating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that helps our family thrive.
The opportunity to cultivate a sense of comfort and tranquility is one of the significant advantages of homemaking.
Unlike the hustle and bustle of the outside world, our homes can serve as a sanctuary—a place where family members can retreat from the stresses of daily life.
Through thoughtful decor, cozy furnishings, and intentional design, we can create spaces that exude warmth and invite a sense of peace.
Homemakers have the time and energy to invest in the little details that make a house a home. Whether it’s arranging fresh flowers, creating a welcoming entryway, or curating a space that reflects the family’s personality, these small touches contribute to a positive and uplifting atmosphere.
The positive impact of a well-maintained home extends to mental and emotional well-being.
A clutter-free and organized environment can alleviate stress and promote a sense of order. It provides the opportunity for creativity and self-expression, allowing family members to find inspiration within the walls of their own home.
8. Lower Stress Levels
One of the many advantages of homemaking is that you have more control over your daily schedule and routines. You can prioritize your tasks based on your individual needs and the needs of your family, which I’ve found reduces stress and overwhelm.
Compared to juggling a full-time career alongside child care responsibilities, staying at home allows for a less stressful environment and providing the opportunity to set your own schedule and prioritize family needs.
Homemakers may have more time to spend with their family, which can provide emotional support and a sense of connection.
Another benefit of being a homemaker in regards to lower stress levels is that we have more time for self-care!
9. Improved Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Being a Homemaker & Stay at Home Mothers (Taking Care of Ourselves)
As a homemaker, we have the time to prioritize our health and focus on our well-being.
We’re able to make healthier choices in regards to meals, exercise, and our physical health. And we have more opportunity to stay on top of our mental health through meditation, yoga, self care, etc.
By proactively tending to both our mental and physical health, homemakers foster a holistic sense of well-being that not only benefits themselves but radiates positively throughout the entire home.
10. Career Flexibility of Homemaking
While staying at home may temporarily pause a full-time career, it can open doors to alternative career paths such as starting a small business or pursuing part-time work, providing financial stability and personal fulfillment.
I found myself doing odd jobs like freelance writing for multiple bloggers and publications all while still remaining home and taking care of my children.
11. Enhanced Creativity
The possibilities are endless when it comes to the creative benefits of a homemaker.
Homemakers and stay-at-home mothers might express creativity through home decorating and design, experimenting with new recipes, baking, cooking from scratch, gardening, sewing, DIY projects, etc.
We truly have the opportunity to explore and hone in on our creative side as a homemaker.
12. Personal Fulfillment Benefits of Being a Homemaker
Homemaking can provide a sense of purpose and meaning, given that we contribute daily to the well-being of our families as stay-at-home parents. I feel a sense of accomplishment any time I learn a new skill such as a new recipe, mastering homemade bread, DIY projects, etc.
I feel confident and proud in my accomplishments and contributions.
13. Appreciating Gender Roles
You know, my husband and I have really leaned into our traditional gender roles as husband and wife, and honestly, it’s been pretty amazing. I get to stay home and nurture our family, which is something I absolutely love doing.
And on his end, he’s out there providing for us, and it’s so comforting knowing that he’s taking care of us in that way. It just feels right.
We have learned to appreciate these roles and how they fit into our lives, allowing us to create a strong foundation for our family while honoring those traditional values, which has almost been lost in today’s society.
In Conclusion: Benefits of Being a Homemaker Include (but are not limited to)…
- building stronger connections with family
