Chemicals and Cosmetics During Pregnancy

Pregnant women use cosmetics for a variety of reasons.

Some may use them to cover blemish or conceal changes that occur to our skin during pregnancy. Others may use them to enhance appearance, leaving us feeling more confident and comfortable in our own skin.

And then there are the women who wear cosmetics for protection against the sun and other environmental factors.

No matter where you fall in this category, cosmetics are here to stay. But unfortunately, not all are safe for use, especially when pregnant.

Exposure to chemicals during pregnancy may pose a risk for both the mother and the developing fetus.

These chemicals include (but not limited to) ingredients such as

  • phthalates- used to increase flexibility and durability of cosmetics (linked to birth defects and developmental issues in fetuses).
  • parabens- used as preservatives in cosmetics (have been found in breast cancer tumors and may be linked to reproductive and developmental issues).
  • lead- a known neurotoxin found in cosmetics (can cause developmental delays and behavioral issues in fetuses).

The internet offers a plethora of information when it comes to the many chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis. However, Little Bean sifts through the information and does the work for us.

Which brings me to the question… What is Little Bean App?

What is Little Bean App?

As I’m sure you already know, the body undergoes many changes during pregnancy affecting the skin, hair, and nails.

Some of the changes to skin include acne, pigmentation, dryness, and more.

We might find ourselves seeking out cosmetics to conceal the many changes our skin undergoes during pregnancy.

It’s so important that we are aware of the ingredients in our cosmetics and if they are safe to use during pregnancy.

Ugghh, but with all the worries we already have during pregnancy, having to research and read labels just seems like a thorn in the side.

Well, luckily, there is an app for that.

Yep, an APP. And it’s easy peasy to navigate.

And that, my friend, is where Little Bean App comes in!

In short, Little Bean is an ingredient checker app for pregnant and/or breastfeeding moms.

How Little Bean App Works

Little Bean App identifies ingredients of potential harm when a phone camera is pointed at the product ingredient list. This helps you determine whether a certain product is safe or unsafe to use during pregnancy.

Yes! It’s as simple as that!

No more googling in the aisle- Just scan the ingredient list and voila! You will find everything you need to know about that product’s safety all within just a few seconds!

Pulling my phone out to google multiple products or look up individual ingredients while pregnant was not ideal. And, honestly, it just didn’t work for me.

But Little Bean App has a solution for that!

The effectiveness, convenience, and peace of mind Little Bean offers is why it’s easily a must have in your pregnancy and breastfeeding journey!

Little Bean’s Story

Little Bean app was founded in 2021 when Mirte, an international model originally from the Netherlands, was pregnant with her first child.

With countless beauty products at home and a ton of ambiguous information online, she was having difficulty determining which of these products to include or exclude from her regimen.

Having recently graduated from Columbia University, she scoured the university’s online library. She then created a personal list of all potentially harmful ingredients that she would rather avoid.

Even with the list in hand, it felt like an impossible task to identify all of the potentially harmful ingredients listed on product labels.

That’s when Little Bean was born.
