Equipment

  • 1 double boiler
  • 1 hand mixer
  • 1 pack small jars

Materials

  • 1 cup rendered tallow grass-fed if possible – it's packed with fatty acids like palmitoleic acid and perfect for skin health
  • 2 tbsp olive oil rich in vitamin E and antioxidants
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil great for moisturizing and has anti-inflammatory properties
  • 1 tbsp sweet almond oil nourishing for dry skin and rich in vitamin B
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil helps with skin tone and protecting against free radicals
  • 10-15 drops essential oils like lavender, rose, or frankincense for added soothing, or tea tree oil for acne-prone skin

Instructions

  • Melt the Tallow- In a double boiler, gently melt your rendered tallow on very low heat. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can use a heatproof bowl over a small saucepan with some water to create the same effect.
  • Combine the Oils- Once the tallow has fully melted, add your olive oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. Stir well to mix the oils into the tallow.
  • Essential Oils (Optional)- Add the essential oils of your choice. I like using lavender or rose for soothing, but if you're aiming for something with a fresh scent, tea tree oil is great for acne-prone skin. Stir until fully combined.
  • Cool and Whip- Let the mixture sit at room temperature for a bit until it begins to solidify. Then, use a hand mixer to whip it into a fluffy, creamy texture. This should take about 5-7 minutes. If you want a more solid version, you can skip the whipping and just allow it to cool in a cool place until it hardens.
  • Store- Once your DIY tallow face cream is whipped and cooled, transfer it into a small jar. It’s best to store it in a dark place, like a cupboard, to preserve its freshness and shelf life.

Notes

  • If you want a whipped tallow balm, simply use the hand mixer for a few extra minutes until it achieves a fluffy consistency.
  • The essential oils you choose can be tailored to your skin’s needs. For sensitive skin, lavender or chamomile are good options, while tea tree oil is ideal for treating blemishes or acne-prone skin.
  • You can adjust the texture by adding more or less of your liquid oils (like olive oil or coconut oil). For a firmer cream, reduce the liquid oils slightly.
  • If you’re making this in bulk or want to store it for a longer time, be sure to keep it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to help extend its shelf life.
