Looking for a simple, natural skincare product that works wonders for dry skin, sensitive skin, and maybe even a little acne-prone skin? Well, friend, let me tell you about tallow face cream! As a farm-raised holistic esthetician and sixth-generation homesteader, tallow is my thing. 😉

We use tallow face cream, tallow moisturizer, tallow lotion, tallow soap, tallow balms– all things tallow products over here (given all the benefits of tallow skincare). We even cook with tallow!

Today, I’ll show you how to make a DIY tallow face cream recipe that’s going to transform your skincare routine—without the fancy price tag or all those toxic ingredients lurking in store-bought stuff. I’m talking real, natural oils like grass-fed beef tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil—the good stuff your skin actually craves.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t tallow, like, that thing we use to cook fries? Well, yes, but turns out beef tallow is amazing for your skin too. And if you render and purify tallow the right way, it won’t make you smell life a beef burger. (Note: If you find that there is a lingering smell in your products, check out How to Take the Beef Smell Out of Tallow blog post).

Tallow is packed with fatty acids like palmitoleic acid and is so great for promoting skin health, boosting moisture, and even tackling skin conditions like diaper rash. Plus, it works wonders on everything from dry skin to reducing the appearance of fine lines—a total multitasker, I’m tellin’ ya.

This tallow cream is perfect for that winter months dry skin struggle, or really any time you need to lock in moisture without that greasy residue. If you’re battling eczema or just want to keep your skin feeling smooth and soft, this recipe is a complete game-changer.

The best part? You’re in control of the shelf life, and you can store it in a dark, cool place for when you need it. So no more worrying about your skin feeling dry, tight, or irritated. With this homemade tallow face cream, your skin will be glowing—and you’ll have a new favorite natural skincare product to add to your routine.

DIY Whipped Tallow Face Cream Recipe

You’re probably wondering how to make this magic happen, right? Well, it’s actually a breeze. Just grab your small jar, double boiler, and get ready to melt your rendered tallow with some of my favorite plant oils, like avocado oil and sweet almond oil.

Oh, and don’t forget to toss in a little vitamin E oil and a few drops of your favorite essential oils (if you’re feeling extra fancy). Just make sure you give it a mixing bowl to get a fluffy consistency (a hand mixer works wonders here, trust me).

Here’s your DIY Tallow Face Cream Recipe that’s simple, nourishing, and totally customizable. Let’s dive right into this natural skincare product that will leave your skin feeling soft, moisturized, and glowing without all the unnecessary chemicals.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rendered tallow (grass-fed if possible – it’s packed with fatty acids like palmitoleic acid and perfect for skin health)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (rich in vitamin E and antioxidants)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (great for moisturizing and has anti-inflammatory properties)
  • 1 tbsp sweet almond oil (nourishing for dry skin and rich in vitamin B)
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil (helps with skin tone and protecting against free radicals)
  • 10-15 drops essential oils (like lavender, rose, or frankincense for added soothing, or tea tree oil for acne-prone skin)

Step-by-Step DIY Whipped Tallow Face Cream Instructions

Melt the Tallow

In a double boiler, gently melt your rendered tallow on very low heat. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can use a heatproof bowl over a small saucepan with some water to create the same effect.

Combine the Oils

Once the tallow has fully melted, add your olive oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. Stir well to mix the oils into the tallow.

Add Vitamin E

Stir in the vitamin E oil for added skin benefits and moisture retention.

Essential Oils

Add the essential oils of your choice. I like using lavender or rose for soothing, but if you’re aiming for something with a fresh scent, tea tree oil is great for acne-prone skin. Stir until fully combined.

Cool and Whip

Let the mixture sit at room temperature for a bit until it begins to solidify. Then, use a hand mixer to whip it into a fluffy, creamy texture. This should take about 5-7 minutes. If you want a more solid version, you can skip the whipping and just allow it to cool in a cool place until it hardens.

Store

Once your DIY tallow face cream is whipped and cooled, transfer it into a small jar. It’s best to store it in a dark place, like a cupboard, to preserve its freshness and shelf life.

Recipe Notes

  • If you want a whipped tallow balm, simply use the hand mixer for a few extra minutes until it achieves a fluffy consistency.
  • The essential oils you choose can be tailored to your skin’s needs. For sensitive skin, lavender or chamomile are good options, while tea tree oil is ideal for treating blemishes or acne-prone skin.
  • You can adjust the texture by adding more or less of your liquid oils (like olive oil or coconut oil). For a firmer cream, reduce the liquid oils slightly.
  • If you’re making this in bulk or want to store it for a longer time, be sure to keep it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to help extend its shelf life.

Why This Tallow Face Cream Recipe Works

The beef tallow in this face cream is an incredible moisturizer because it’s full of essential fatty acids that help to keep your skin soft and nourished. It also helps to balance your skin’s natural oils, making it a great option for many skin types—even those with sensitive skin or issues like dry skin. The addition of olive oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil helps to boost hydration, and the vitamin E oil adds some extra protection against environmental stressors.

Enjoy your new DIY tallow face cream—a simple, effective natural skincare product that works for all the right reasons!

Keep it practical. Keep it simple. And keep makin’ your granny proud! Thanks for stoppin’ by!
